St. John the Divine

#74

Saint John is known by many titles, including the Evangelist, the Divine, and the Beloved Disciple. He is the Beloved Disciple because, at the Last Supper, John was the disciple who clung to Jesus and sat beside him. Both St. John and St. James, his brother, had strong personalities that even earned a scolding from Jesus, who called them "sons of thunder" for wanting to call down fire on a town of nonbelievers. John is known for having written the Bible books Gospel According to John, the Three Letters of John, and possibly the Revelation to John. John is commonly depicted in artworks as holding a book or scroll.

Angel of Resurrection

#77

This is the angel of resurrection, commonly known as the archangel Michael in Jewish, Islamic, and Christian traditions. This angel has many roles, including carrying human souls to heaven. This window was dedicated to Frederick Harrington Lever Jr., who lived and died in the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey at 11 years old. The relative who commissioned this window had faith that young Frederick's soul would be escorted to heaven by Archangel Michael.

Resurrection

#81

Weeping Mary Magdalene stood outside of Jesus's empty tomb when she suddenly saw angels inside. She cried to the angels that her Lord was missing. Jesus then appeared behind her and asked why she was crying. Belatedly, she realized it was Jesus and rejoiced. He told Mary, "Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God."

Saint Elizabeth

#84

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) is revered as a pious woman who greatly cared for those in need and devoted herself to following the Franciscan lifestyle. She was a Hungarian princess whose mother was murdered by warring Hungarian and German noblemen. Grieving, young Elizabeth sought solace in religion with the Franciscans. She would work methodically to imitate their humble and philanthropic lifestyle. One day, when Elizabeth secretly took bread from the castle to feed the needy, her husband caught her leaving and asked her to reveal her items. Miraculously, the bread in her basket transformed into roses. Her husband then understood that she was in God's favor. St. Elizabeth is the patron saint of charities, bakers, beggars, and brides.

Good Shepherd

#2

Similar to other artworks in the theme of the Good Shepherd, Jesus stands tall, holding a lamb in His arms to show care for His flock—His people. This gentle act reflects kindness and devotion to those He watches over. The lamb appears relaxed, demonstrating the trust shared between the sheep and their shepherd. Imagery of Christ as a shepherd dates back to the Late Roman Empire, often serving as a visual representation of John 10:11, where Jesus proclaims, "I am the good shepherd."

King David

#86

King David solemnly stands in center view with a golden lyre in his left hand and a metal spear in his right. David became king of Judah in 1000 B.C.E. at 30 years old. He was best known for his youth as a shepherd boy, a lyre player for King Saul, and for having slain Goliath. David had an unstable rule that was worsened by his sinful actions that inspired his family to unleash their own bad intentions. War broke out over throne succession, ending with Solomon taking the throne.

St. Margaret

#90

Commemorative of a Christian martyr from the era of persecution in Rome, this window is of brilliant opalescent glass designed and made by Tiffany Studios. Saint Margaret standing atop the angered waves of the sea, triumphing over them with the power of the cross which she holds on high. Like many other Tiffany windows, this glass was molded specifically to form the folds in the garment. On October 24, 1899, this window was unveiled as a memorial to three young girls who lost their lives in the wreck of the yacht “Paul Jones” in the Gulf of Mexico.

Christ as the Good Shepherd

#92

Jesus gazes up at the heavens while a flock of sheep graze on a hill, representing the people who follow Jesus Christ's word. This window references the Bible verse of John 10:11: "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep... I know my sheep and my sheep know — just as the Father knows me and I know the Father — and I lay down my life for the sheep."

Angel of Faith

#95

While there are four named angels in the Bible, this angel is untitled, only demonstrating the absolute devotion and worship to God that all angels have. This angel extends their arms up to heaven in prayer or in praise of God, gazing at the bright golden light shining down from heaven. This theme is prevalent among Tiffany windows and can be found in many churches with Tiffany's stained glass windows.
